Happy Star Wars Wednesday. Last week we looked at Yoda quotes and their biblical cousins; this week let’s see what Obi-Wan has said that shares, at its heart, biblical parallels.

1. The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. ~ 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT

What gives a believer power is the Spirit…

Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. ~ 1 Corinthians 12:13 NLT

…which binds all believers together into one.

2. The Force will be with you, always.

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. ~ Matthew 28:20 NLT

Christ and his Spirit are with his Jedi apprentices always.

3. Who’s the more foolish, the fool, or the fool who follows him?

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. ~ Proverbs 13:20 ESV

When we follow fools, we too become fools. How foolish is that?

They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch. ~ Matthew 15:14 NLT

4. Your eyes can deceive you, don’t trust them.

Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered. ~ Proverbs 28:26 ESV

As Dumbledore said, we humans do have a knack for choosing the things that are worst for us. Because of this, God sent his Spirit and his Words (truth) to be our guides. If we trust in them rather than our own understanding, we will do well.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. ~ Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV

5. In my experience, there’s no such thing as luck.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. ~ James 1:17 ESV

Good things are from God, not from Luck. He’s our Father, who has a plan to work everything out for good. Thank God when good things come your way, not luck.

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. ~ Romans 8:28 ESV

6. You can’t win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. ~ John 16:7 ESV

In sacrificing his life, Christ became even more powerful than anyone could have foresaw…

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. ~ John 14:12-14 ESV

…because in giving up his life for us, he was able to send his Spirit so he could be with all of us, all the time, until forever.

7. Luke! Don’t give in to hate. That leads to the Dark Side.

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. ~ 1 John 4:20 ESV

Love is light and hate is darkness; we must strive to love despite the pull to give in to hate…

We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. ~ 1 John 3:14-18 ESV

…because hate leads to the Dark Side; hate leads to spiritual death.
