Supergirl, Manhunter seems, to me, to carry two very powerful themes:
- The value of trust.
- The damage of judgement.
My husband and I have often discussed how trust is the most valuable currency each individual has. With every action and choice we make we have the opportunity to increase our trust bank or go bankrupt. Supergirl learns this first hand after going AWOL due what the Red Kryptonite brought out of her. Trust is earned increment by increment, but it is lost all at once—which is why lying is so damaging. But this brings me to point two… Judgement.
When we judge others, like Supergirl is being judged by Lucy and the rest of the world, we are judging ourselves. We are saying that we’ve never done anything wrong before, are incapable of doing something wrong, and are better than the other person. Supergirl is not the only one with some hate in their hearts they are dealing with—Lucy is too. Hatred that leads her to send two innocents to a place where she knows they will be dissected. Thankfully Lucy has a Paul moment and makes an 180, working to fight injustice rather than perpetrate it under a guise of righteousness.
Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!
Tie them around your neck as a reminder.
Write them deep within your heart.
Then you will find favor with both God and people,
and you will earn a good reputation. ~ Proverbs 3:3-4 NLT
None of us is perfect. We may very well face a moment where our trust bank is broke, but we can earn it back one act at a time or send it further and further into debt. Lucy chooses to repent from her ways and re-earn trust by doing what is right, helping Supergirl to rescue Alex and Hank. But Siobhan chooses to continue to weave webs of lies and her account falls even further.
Looking forward to seeing what Supergirl (and Flash?) make of her. 😉
