I’m watching The Walking Dead for the first time. Actually, bingeing would be a more appropriate word. A friend has all the seasons on DVD, so we’re racing through them. One thing I’ve noticed is just how much they include Christian messages and struggles with Chrisitan ideas.

In season 2, episode 7, Pretty Much Dead Already, Herschel is ready to throw Rick and he crew off his farm. But his wayward daughter, Maggie, reminds him,

A new command I give to you: Love one another as I have loved you.

Maggie quotes Jesus from John 13:34. In trying to do what is right, Hershel loses his way. Fear makes him forget to love. In TWD, fear changes a lot of people. It changes Shane too. Fear slowly seeped the love out of him until he could turn his gun on his best friend out of greed.

Lesson from TWD (and the Bible): Fear is the opposite of love.

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. ~ 1 John 4:8 ESV
