Why did the Zombie Apocalypse happen? In Andrew’s words, as an answer to prayer.
Sometimes bad things are actually good things. Most of us have wondered at least once in our life why God allows bad things to happen. If He exists, why doesn’t he stop them?
A really simplified answer — sometimes bad things have to happen in order for good things to happen.
Christ being beaten and crucified without just cause was a bad thing. But because this bad thing happened, Christ was able to rise from the dead so that all who place their trust in Him never have to fear death. That’s such a good thing we call it the Good News.
Old Testament Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers: bad thing. Joseph spends years as a slave but eventually is promoted to the second most powerful man in the world. Famine strikes the land. His family has nothing to eat. They come to him not knowing who he is, but all the bad he’s been through has brought him to the point where he both forgives his family and saves them. Good thing.
A lot of bad things happen to Rick and his group, but all those bad things brought them to Alexandria — a very good thing. Granted, they are still experiencing bad in the midst of the good (if not there would be no story to tell), but each bad thing strengthens the survivors. Granted, Robert Kirkman authors their universe, not God, so take that with a grain of salt.
James, the brother of Jesus, wrote to the Jewish people, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” (James 1:2-4 NLT)
Perhaps, instead of asking why God lets bad things happen to us we should be asking why God cares about us enough to let some bad things happen in order that good things can be produced in us. God loves us. When we hurt, he hurts. He could easily shield us from every difficulty in life but, like a good father, he allows certain things to happen so we can grow.
Bad things happen to us so that good things can happen in us.
Experiencer of bad things who’s had good things happen in her. 😉
